In this blog, we provide some examples of Sydney Strata buildings which have installed solar systems which share solar power into individual apartments via the Allume Energy Solar Sharing System known as "Solshare".... Here are some selected case studies of solar sharing where Wattblock has worked with the residential apartment buildings on solar feasibility, business case or running a solar sharing tender. 1) 26 Woolcott Ave Waverton is a small block of 5 apartments. 4 of the apartments had single phase electricity meters and the penthouse apartment had a three phase electricity meter. The owners were happy to have an even split of solar power at this building, even though the unit entitlements of each apartment were not equal. This building had a curved metal roof, so they used the Sunman eArc flexible lightweight panels and the flexible panels bend on the curve of the roof. The neighbours actually think the roof looks better after installation of the panels than prior to installation of the panels as it creates a mosaic. Video of a strata committee member talking about the install is here. This building participated in the North Sydney Futureproofing Apartments program and received a council funded sustainability report provided by Wattblock. The solar installer was Energus. 2) 8-10 Parraween St Cremorne is the first residential strata building in Sydney to install Allume Energy solar sharing and also install a 10kWh battery. This is an apartment block which participated in the North Sydney Futureproofing Apartments program and consists of 9 lots. Wattblock provided an energy saving report for the building. The solar installer was Bare Energy. 3) 238 Longeville Rd Lane Cove is an apartment building of 9 lots which participated in the Lane Cove council Greener Apartments program. This block has 3 phase apartment meters for each of the apartments so the Allume Energy solshare only connects to one of the phases for each apartment. This apartment block also connects the 3 phases of the common area meter to the Allume solshare. It is an example of the Allume Energy Solshare sharing solar power across both apartments and the common areas. Wattblock provided a sustainability report for this building. The solar installer was Jusaso. 4) Cowan Terraces. This strata building consists of 10 townhouses. The shared solar system is only located on the rooftops of 6 of the 10 townhouses for proximity to the meterboard which is located on one end of the building. This building had to upgrade its meterboard and upgrade to smart meters to be able to do Allume Energy solar sharing. Wattblock did a solar feasibility study for this building. The solar installer was Solar Energy Enterprises. 5) 288 Lawrence St at Alexandria is an industrial to apartment conversion consisting of 14 lots. Wattblock did a solar feasibility study for them in 2022 and they installed their Allume Energy Solar Sharing system in 2023. As well as reducing the cost-of-living, this strata scheme is also getting property valuation uplift through having solar connected to the individual apartments. The solar installer for this building was Solar Energy Enterprises. 6) Zinc at 30-34 Garden St Alexandria is one of the most sustainable strata buildings in Australia. Wattblock provided an EV charging survey and an EV charging feasibility study for this building and introduced them to Tesla as an Australian test site for localisation of their apartment EV charging system. Wattblock also introduced the flat cable for EV charging to Zinc and they were one of the first buildings in Sydney to install this EV charging backbone system. Zinc first installed a common property solar system of 8kW, then increased the size of it to 25kW. As a 2nd solar project, Zinc installed 60kW of shared solar with 3 x Allume Energy Solshares with each Allume Energy Solshare connected to 15 apartments each. Sydney Solar Group were the installer for this site. Watch a fireside chat with Nathan Hage from Zinc which was recorded as part of Climate Action Week 2024 here. 7) Wharf Terraces is 34 townhouses on Woolloomooloo Bay which is part of a Building Management Committee (BMC) and co-located with other strata plans such as a marina and commercial carpark. Wharf Terraces installed 22kW common area solar and a 24.6kWh common area battery for the purposes of EV charging. They also installed 4 x Allume Energy Solshares with a total of 78kW of shared solar. Each of the townhouses had three phase power and originally had 3 analogue accumulation meters for each apartment. As a precursor project each apartment had its 3 analogue accumulation meters replaced with a single 3 phase smart meter. The Allume Energy solar sharing just connects to one of the three phases for each apartment. Each Allume Energy solshare is sharing solar power across either 7 or 8 apartments. Other examples of Allume Solar Sharing being installed for strata in NSW are 28 Pembroke St Ashfield, 3 Raymond Rd Neutral Bay, 6 White St Balgowlah, Edgewater at Bayview, 30-34 Wilson St Newtown, Quadrant in Lane Cove, 12-28 Daphne St Botany, 1 Ocean Ave Double Bay, 63 Curlewis St Bondi Beach , 43 Firth St Arncliffe and 288 Lawrence St Alexandria.
