Who's Who of Strata Sustainability 2017

As we close 2017, we look back at which strata management companies, strata managers, building managers and councils excelled in the energy and sustainability space.
It’s been a big year in the strata energy and sustainability space. This is great news for the sector and there is plenty more to come in 2018.

McCormack’s Strata won Strata Management company of the year in the Smart Green Apartments, having had 10 of their schemes participate in the Smart Green Apartments program from 2016 into 2017.

Pica Group (BCS) had 6 properties  and GKStrata has 1 property get into the current round of City of Sydney’s Smart Green Apartments program for 2017-2018.

StrataChoice put the upcoming NABERS program into the email tagline of all their staff, put together a NABERS, Embedded Network & Electric Vehicle information session for property developers.

Sarraf Partners is co-ordinating embedded electrical networks for a number of their new developments and will be managing a site with embedded electrical, embedded hot water and 40kW of solar during construction in 2018.

Maria Diswe, from Strata Title Management won “Smart Green Apartments Strata Manager of the year” for her work at Regis Towers.

David Ferguson from Strata Plus chaired the UDIA’s strata sub-committee and got the members thinking about electric vehicles, solar and batteries in strata.

Wellman Strata, Strata Republic and StrataChoice decided to train all their strata managers on Energy and Sustainability.

Archers Strata setup Arc Utilities with the view to becoming an accredited Embedded Network Manager.

Strata Community Australia (NSW) invited Wattblock and Jetcharge to present at the Strata Owners Day on 30th April at the SMC.

Christine Byrne from Greenstrata won the President’s award from Chris Duggan at SCA (NSW) annual conference.

City of Sydney Smart Green Apartments team won the “Built Environment Award”, edging out Mirvac for the EY Centre at 200 George St.

The Stucco Solar + Storage project won the Community Leadership award at the Green Globe Awards for their 30kW solar and 43kWh lithium ion battery in a multi-tenant property project.

Jamesons Strata partnered with UNSW and Wattblock under a Jobs for NSW Collaborative Solutions Innovation Grant to design an “energy saving platform for strata managers”.

Asher McLoughlin, building manager at Stamford Marque was joint “Smart Green Apartments” building manager of the year and also the most geared up electric vehicle recharge building manager.

Glen Weber, building manager at Observatory Tower sized up the largest electric vehicle recharging in strata infrastructure project.

North Sydney Council got deepest into natural refrigerant heat pumps and ran “My Green Apartments” program.

Kurringai Council ran their Smart Units program again.

Sasco Developments raised the sustainability bar for new apartment blocks in the City of Ryde with the Genesis development at Shepherd’s Bay.

City Futures Project at UNSW launched the Sustainable Retrofits site.

Wattblock’s Scott Witheridge (pictured) won the Ann Shevill Essay Award from Strata Community Australia (Qld) for his essay on the “2051 – A Strata Odyssey”.

Power Ledger picked up the “Energy Innovation of the Year” prize at the inaugural WA Energy Awards and followed it up with “Highest Trending Company” in the Techboard WA awards.

Sacha Reid was instrumental in organising the Strata Title Conference at Griffith University with the theme of "Changing Landscapes" and Engage 2017. 
Daniel Borin from StrataMax was invited to speak on the Consequences of Disruptive Technology in the strata industry. Carlos Flores spoke on “Ratings for Apartments: NABERS”.

Elon Musk won a bet with Mike Cannon Brookes to complete a 130 MWh lithium ion battery project in South Australia within 100 days, expected to assist 30,000 house and apartment residences this summer.

While many people are taking a break over the festive season, we have to remind everyone that energy burns 365 days a year. Maybe light a candle and save some electricity over the holiday break. See you all in 2018.
